Progress up to January 2010
- We have over 620 trained health activists who work to reduce maternal and infant deaths in over 550 villages in Sultanpur and surrounding areas in UP.
- We have also launched 'save a mother' in Babina in Jhansi district and Chickbalapur district in Karnatka.
- We will launch 'save a mother' in Phoolpur, UP in February 2010.
- In 2009, we trained over 1000 more women in maternal care, out of which over 450 were designated as health activists.
- They track and follow each pregnant mother and help her with safe pregnancy and delivery. They follow infants and children also.
- They educate the village population about sanitation, infectious diseases, AIDS, adolescent health and reproductive health.
- They work in tandem with the public health system workers.
- They collect health data from the villages.
- They create awareness that safe motherhood is a human right.
Project plan for 2010
- We will train 800 more volunteer health activists to cover about 1400 villages by the end of 2010.
- Expand our activity in Chickbalapur district in Karnataka and Phoolpur in UP and Babina, Jhnasi.
- Continue refresher training for activists who are already in the field.
- Launch pilot programs in eye care and TB eradication.
- Connect health activists to local primary health centers and local hospital and train them in management of primary health centers.
- Program impact analysis to make improvements.
- Scale up the program to other districts. Pilot programs in Jhansi and Phoolpur in June 2009
Chapter launch and collaboration
- Launch chapters in various cities in the USA and India.
- Link with various organizations in India, USA and Africa doing similar work.
